Drug coding as a treatment option

License of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine dated 08.07.2020 No. 3197/L-P

Drug coding is a procedure that is carried out to create a barrier or blocking effect to prevent drug use and reduce the desire to take drugs. Drug coding is actively used in many countries of the world, including Ukraine. It shows good results with the correct selection of drugs and compliance with the conditions of treatment. It is important to understand that coding from drug addiction does not replace treatment. To get rid of addiction, the patient undergoes complex therapy, including detoxification of the body, medication, psychotherapy, rehabilitation measures and coding.

What drugs are used for drug coding

Medication coding from drug addiction involves the introduction of special drug blockers – antagonists into the patient’s body, which allow not only to cleanse the body, but also to alleviate the patient’s condition. They also eliminate psychological dependence on narcotic substances. The period of action of “fixing” is individual and depends on the administered dose of the drug and the peculiarities of the patient’s organism. Most drug blockers are based on such substances as:

  • Naltrexone – used to create a blocking effect that prevents opiates (e.g. heroin) from enhancing the effects of opiates. If the patient attempts to use opiates, Naltrexone may cause a lack of narcotic effect.
  • Disulfiram – commonly used to treat alcohol dependence, but can also be used to treat drug dependence. When drugs are used in combination with disulfiram, the patient may experience unpleasant physical reactions such as vomiting and dizziness.

In some cases, the drugs may be introduced into the patient’s body in the form of an implant that releases them gradually over a long period of time. Drug coders can also be administered by injection into soft tissue or intravenously.

The coding procedure is carried out in a hospital. Before the procedure, the patient must completely give up taking drugs for 2 weeks. Doctors use detoxification methods to relieve the developing withdrawal (withdrawal). It is impossible to refuse to take another dose on your own. Detoxification is carried out by classical methods or with the help of CBOD.

Before coding, specialists collect a complete medical history of the patient, conduct a number of tests, naltrexone test is carried out, according to the results of which a decision is made on the possibility of blockers. It is important to remember that during the entire period of action of drug blockers the patient should not take alcohol, sedatives and tranquilisers. The effect of the injected drug begins after 1-1.5 days.

Effectiveness of coding for drug addiction

The effectiveness of coding will vary depending on the patient and the technique chosen. Some people may stop using drugs after coding, but many patients relapse. How effective the applied method will be depends on the experience of the doctor and the individual characteristics of the patient’s body.

The effectiveness of drug addiction treatment usually depends on a comprehensive approach that includes psychological support, social rehabilitation and other methods. Before making a decision about drug coding, it is important to consult a qualified medical specialist and assess all the pros and cons of this method of treatment in each specific case.
