Drug substitution: effective treatment for drug addiction

License of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine dated 08.07.2020 No. 3197/L-P

Substitution (or implantation) as a method of drug dependence treatment is one of the most widespread and used today in Ukraine technologies for effective recovery from drug dependence. The basic idea of substitution is that the patient is given an implant (most often a subcutaneous capsule preparation) that releases a medication (e.g. naltrexone) over a long period of time to block the effects of drugs.

Stages of filtration: how the procedure is carried out

Drug substitution can only be carried out if important conditions are met:

  • the patient’s consent to the procedure;
  • carrying out a preliminary detoxification of the body.

It is not possible to take drugs without the patient’s consent and without the patient being aware of the consequences of breaking the rules. The use of drugs after drug substitution causes serious physiological consequences and the patient must be aware of this.

How is drug rehab in the clinic? The procedure is carried out in stages:

  • the patient must be assessed by a qualified clinician to determine if substitution as a treatment option is appropriate;
  • the doctor develops an individualised treatment plan and chooses the appropriate implant and dosage of medication;
  • the implant procedure is usually carried out by a surgeon or doctor who specialises in this treatment – the implant is inserted under the skin, usually in the upper arm or thigh area;
  • After implantation, the patient is provided with medical support and regular medical follow-up to assess the effectiveness and safety of the treatment.

Substitution is carried out after all traces of toxins have been eliminated from the body and primary therapy aimed at restoring the functions of internal organs and systems has been carried out.

What results should be expected from the sub-stimulant

The results of drug treatment can vary depending on the individual characteristics of the patient and the chosen methodology. The most common treatment outcomes include:

  • Reducing the desire to use drugs – the implant usually releases an antagonistic medication that blocks the effects of drugs. This process can reduce the desire to use drugs.
  • Minimising the risk of overdose – Substitution can reduce the risk of overdose as the drugs may not affect the patient as much as they did before the procedure.
  • Continued use of the implant can help the patient to reassess their habits and establish a period of withdrawal.

The choice of medication for effective drug addiction treatment using the substitution method is always individualised. The doctor may use medications such as Naltrexone and Naloxone. Unfortunately, the choice of drug blockers is not as large as specialists who choose an individualised approach would like. Not all patients are suitable for these medications, so in some cases it is not possible to use drugs and they are replaced by other methods of drug treatment. But only a doctor can determine whether the use of blockers is possible in each specific case, based on the results of examination of the patient. In most cases, it is possible and this method allows fixing the results of treatment and becomes another incentive for the patient to start a new life. After the implants are inserted, the patient undergoes a long rehabilitation and is under the doctor’s control for a long time. After the drugs have expired, if necessary, the procedure is repeated.
