How drug detoxification is carried out

License of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine dated 08.07.2020 No. 3197/L-P

Drug detoxification is a process designed to rid the body of physically and psychologically addictive drugs. This process can be a critical step on the road to recovery from drug addiction. Drug detoxification is done through drug therapy and through the use of hardware methods to remove toxins from the body. But detox alone is not enough to fully recover from addiction.

Medical detoxification

Drug detoxification with drugs and machines should be carried out in medical facilities where the patient is under constant supervision of specialists. Doctors may also administer medication to ease withdrawal symptoms and maintain normal body functions.

In some cases, substitution medications such as methadone or buprenorphine are used to help reduce the desire for drugs and reduce withdrawal symptoms.

During detoxification, it is important to maintain electrolyte balance through intravenous solutions and other medical procedures.

In some cases, it is possible to detoxify from drug poisoning at home. After primary care, the patient should undergo inpatient treatment, which is the only way to get rid of addiction and start a new life without drugs.

Psychological support

Psychological therapies, including cognitive behavioural therapy and psychotherapy, help patients cope with the psychological aspects of addiction and develop strategies to prevent relapse. Psychological help can be individualised or involve participation in group sessions and meeting others going through similar difficulties.

Results of detoxification

Drug detoxification helps to address several issues:

  • The main goal of detoxification is to cleanse the body of drugs and eliminate physical dependence;
  • reduction of physical withdrawal symptoms such as drug cravings (withdrawal), insomnia, muscle and joint pain, nausea, etc.
  • Improving the patient’s psychological well-being and ability to regain control of their life;
  • the opportunity to move on to the next stage of treatment, such as rehabilitation and long-term support.

It is important to note that detoxification is only the first step in drug treatment. After successful detoxification, patients are usually advised to continue treatment in a rehabilitation programme and maintain abstinence from drugs on a long-term basis. Treatment is only possible with the consent of the patient.
