Inpatient drug treatment: methods and principles of therapy

License of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine dated 08.07.2020 No. 3197/L-P

Addiction is one of the most serious and widespread diseases of the modern world. Unfortunately, addiction is a consequence of a person’s own decision. It does not come out of nowhere, it is not carried by viruses and it cannot be contracted accidentally. Not taking drugs seriously, believing that “just one time” will not cause addiction, choosing the wrong environment – any of these reasons can have terrible consequences.

Drug addiction treatment is impossible without the help of a team of specialists. Addiction cannot be treated on its own or with pills available in pharmacies. If you or a loved one has a drug problem, contact a specialised clinic for inpatient treatment as soon as possible.

Why it is important to treat drug addiction in an inpatient setting

Residential drug treatment, also known as drug rehabilitation, is a comprehensive approach to combating drug addiction. The principles and methods of treatment may vary depending on the specific rehabilitation programme and methodology, but generally include the following main aspects:

  • Assessment and diagnosis of the condition – the first step towards recovery is an assessment of the patient’s condition, including an analysis of their level of dependence, physical and mental condition, medical problems and history of drug use. This information allows for the development of an individualised treatment plan.
  • Detoxification – If the patient is physically dependent on drugs, the first stage of treatment may be detoxification, which aims to cleanse the body of drugs. This is usually medically supervised and involves the use of medication to relieve withdrawal symptoms.
  • Psychotherapy – psychotherapy is the foundation of substance abuse treatment. Patients learn to understand the causes of their addiction, develop stress management strategies, and learn decision-making and relapse prevention skills.
  • Group therapy – participation in group sessions with other addicts can be useful for sharing experiences and support. Group therapy helps to create a supportive atmosphere and allows patients to feel less isolated.
  • Individual therapy – a psychotherapist or psychologist may have one-to-one sessions with a patient to work on their individual problems and goals.
  • Physical rehabilitation – exercise and sports help to restore the patient’s physical health, and can also help them learn how to cope with stress and anxiety.
  • Social support – social support is an important aspect of rehabilitation. Patients learn how to re-establish their social ties, socialise with family and friends, and seek ways to find support in the community.

The goal of residential drug treatment is not only to relieve physical dependence, but also to prepare the patient for successful reintegration into society. Patients are given the skills to find employment, education and rebuild relationships.

Inpatient drug treatment is usually long-term and requires the patient’s participation and motivation to recover. It is important to choose a suitable rehabilitation programme that takes into account the individual needs and characteristics of each patient. For this purpose, the drug addict conducts preliminary examinations and studies the patient’s anamnesis in detail.

Inpatient drug treatment is the only way to get rid of your drug problem. It is impossible to cure drug addiction at home. As soon as you have detected symptoms of drug addiction in a loved one, contact a narcologist at the GarMed Clinic for information on further actions.
