Marijuana treatment: methods and approaches

License of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine dated 08.07.2020 No. 3197/L-P

Dependence on marijuana, like other drugs, can develop in different people. The power of “weed” should not be underestimated, as it is no less intense than the synthetic drugs used by addicts to achieve a state of euphoria. How to determine the presence of addiction to marijuana? There are several pronounced symptoms, the presence of several of them should alert the loved ones of the patient.

Symptoms of marijuana addiction include:

  • Constant desire to use marijuana – people suffering from addiction may feel a strong urge to smoke pot and cannot control that urge;
  • tolerance can develop after prolonged use of cannabis herb, which means that the dose needs to be increased to achieve the desired effect;
  • some people may experience physical and emotional symptoms when they stop using marijuana – insomnia, irritability, loss of appetite and muscle aches;
  • Marijuana addiction can lead to a person spending most of their time searching for, acquiring and using the drug;
  • People with marijuana dependence may have problems with relationships, employment, and lifestyle;
  • people suffering from addiction may continue to use marijuana despite the negative effects on their health and lives.

It is important to note that not everyone who uses marijuana is addicted, and the risk of developing addiction can vary in strength from person to person. Genetic factors, social environment, and the length and intensity of pot use can influence the likelihood of developing an addiction. It is not worth the risk – there is no way to know in advance how prone you are to developing a problem.

If you or someone you know is having difficulty controlling their use of marijuana or other substances, it is important to seek help from an addiction specialist. Treatment for marijuana addiction may include medication therapy, psychotherapy, and support.

Marijuana dependence treatment: how therapy is conducted

It is important to remember that each person is unique, and treatment methods should be adapted to the individual needs and characteristics of the patient. The most effective results are obtained by applying a set of measures, which includes:

  • Psychotherapeutic techniques such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) that help patients develop skills to manage stress, recognise situations of temptation and overcome addiction.
  • Motivational therapy, which aims to increase the patient’s motivation to stop using marijuana. The therapist helps the patient to develop a system of motivations and goals for behaviour change.
  • Participation in group sessions where people come together to discuss their problems with cannabis. Such therapy allows patients to feel less isolated and to find support in other people going through similar difficulties.

Is there a medication treatment for addiction? At this time, there are no specific medications to treat marijuana addiction like there are for opiate or alcohol addiction. However, some medications can be used to treat co-occurring conditions and mental health disorders caused by substance abuse.

Marijuana addiction treatment should be individualised and tailored to the specific needs of the patient. It often involves a combination of different methods. It is important to see a qualified addiction specialist or psychotherapist for professional counselling and to develop a treatment plan.
