MDMA, also known as “ecstasy”, is a psychostimulant and hallucinogenic narcotic substance. It belongs to the phenylethylamine class of chemicals and is a synthetic drug. MDMA has mood-altering properties and also affects sensory perception.
How does MDMA affect the body? There are several confirmed facts about the results of ecstasy’s effects on a person’s physical and psychological state:
- One of the main effects of MDMA is euphoria and elevated mood. People who use the drug feel an increase in positive emotions and feel more social and emotionally open.
- MDMA can heighten sensitivity to sound, light and touch. This leads to feelings of deep pleasure and an enhanced perception of music and the world around you. Ecstasy is often used in nightclubs, where the euphoria of the drug is particularly acute.
Ecstasy has a number of potential risks and complications, including:
- hyperthermia (increased body temperature), which can lead to serious health problems, including hyperthermic shock;
- dehydration (dehydration) – because of the stimulant nature of MDMA, a person may feel more energetic and active, leading to excessive physical activity and fluid loss;
- constriction of blood vessels, which increases the risk of high blood pressure and circulatory problems;
- psychological problems such as anxiety, depression, panic attacks, and sleep disorders. Withdrawal from the drug can also cause depression and mood disorders.
It is important to note that the use of ecstasy is illegal. The safety and consequences of using the drug can vary depending on various factors, including the dose, the quality of the drug, the health status of the user and the concurrent use of other substances.
If you or someone you know has a problem using MDMA or other drugs, it is recommended that you seek help from a qualified medical or addiction professional.

Ecstasy: addiction treatment
Ecstasy addiction treatment is carried out in specialised medical institutions, drug treatment clinics or rehabilitation centres. The following methods are used for the purpose of MDMA addiction therapy:
- At first contact, the doctor will assess the patient’s condition and perform a diagnostic evaluation to determine the degree of dependence, the physical and psychological effects of ecstasy use, and an assessment of the patient’s general health.
- Because ecstasy is a synthetic drug, it is not physically addictive in the same sense as opiates or alcohol. However, an addiction specialist may prescribe a detoxification programme to cleanse the body of residues of the substance.
- Individual or group psychotherapy is an important part of ecstasy addiction treatment. Psychological support helps the patient to understand the reasons and factors that contributed to drug use, develop relapse prevention mechanisms and learn to cope with stress and difficulties in life without using drugs.
- Some patients may receive medication to alleviate withdrawal symptoms and manage psychiatric symptoms associated with ecstasy dependence. The use of pharmacotherapy is always individualised and depends on the needs of each patient.
- After treatment in a clinic or rehabilitation centre, an individual rehabilitation plan will be developed for the patient. This may include attending support groups, continuing psychotherapy, participating in the 12-step programme or other support programmes.
Ecstasy addiction treatment should be supervised by qualified and experienced professionals who can tailor treatment methods to the individual needs of the patient.
