Correction of co-dependence: effective methods of treatment in a rehabilitation centre

License of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine dated 08.07.2020 No. 3197/L-P

Co-dependency correction is the process of working with the disturbances, changes that occur with co-dependent behaviour. Co-dependence is a pathological, undeveloped form of restriction, often associated with substance or gambling addiction. Co-dependence also involves the occurrence of fear of being alone or loss of control.

Help for co-dependents is just as important as help for drug addicts or alcoholics. If there is a co-dependent person in the family, the problem affects all the loved ones. Such people strive for complete control over the life of relatives. Such behaviour often leads to the development of depression, nervous breakdowns, aggression. People with co-dependence lose themselves, their behaviour is characterized by low self-esteem, they are constantly afraid of condemnation and often hide problems from others. The pathological desire to care for others takes on enormous proportions. At the same time, the refusal of close people to help leads to inadequate reactions.

Treatment and correction of co-dependency always starts with acceptance and realisation of the problem. There is no need to postpone visiting a rehabilitation centre until later. The earlier the problem is identified, the faster and easier the rehabilitation will be.

Co-dependency correction: methods and approaches

Co-dependency correction involves a variety of techniques and strategies to help people suffering from co-dependent relationships to support their thinking, behaviour and relationships. This process may include:

  • therapy
  • group support
  • educational programmes
  • personal self-awareness
  • Developing self-care skills.

The goal of co-dependency correction is to help people recognise their role in destructive relationships, develop management strategies, improve self-esteem and learn how to build healthier relationships.

Correction of co-dependency in rehabilitation centres is often carried out using a comprehensive approach that includes various methods and techniques. Individual therapy, for example, helps to achieve effective results. Various therapeutic approaches such as cognitive-behavioural, psychodynamic therapy or family system therapy are used in the course of treatment.

Another common approach is 12-step therapy. It is based on the principles of the Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) programme and involves working in stages (12 steps) to achieve results and maintain recovery.

Group therapy helps to effectively deal with co-dependency. It can be conducted in a variety of ways:

  • Group support sessions – in a group setting, participants can discuss their problems, express their experiences and receive support from others in similar circumstances.
  • Group skills sessions – focused on developing the skills needed to effectively manage stress, solve analytical problems and create healthy boundaries.
  • Educational programmes – various lectures and seminars, courses aimed at introducing the basics of co-dependency, its consequences, as well as learning coping methods. They are aimed at raising awareness, developing self-reflection skills and teaching coping strategies for co-dependent behaviour.

Family therapy is an equally effective method of treatment and correction of co-dependency. It implies family participation in the rehabilitation process, development of family support and participation of close people in the recovery process.

Successful correction of co-dependent individual behaviour requires taking into account additional unique features of each person. The combination of different methods is selected purely individually – only in this way it can be effective in eliminating the causes and consequences of the development of the problem.
