The 12-Step Programme: effective addiction treatment

License of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine dated 08.07.2020 No. 3197/L-P

The 12-step programme is an effective method of addiction treatment developed and widely used in rehabilitation centres to combat various types of illnesses, including alcohol, drug, gambling and other addictions. The 12-step programme is based on the idea of mutual help and support between people suffering from similar problems.

12 steps: basic principles and steps

The 12 Steps rehabilitation programme is based on step-by-step work with addiction. As practice shows, this approach leads to getting rid of the problem and becomes an excellent start for a new life.

The first step is for the patient to recognise their addiction and their lack of ability to cope on their own. This is the realisation of the hopelessness of their own situation. Only then can we start to work on solving the problem.

At the second stage, the patient recognises that there is a higher power that can help him overcome his addiction, and he turns to this power for help. The role of a higher power can be anything – what matters is not the content of the concept, but its significance.

The third step on the road to recovery is that the patient makes the decision to surrender his life and his will to a higher power to allow it to guide and direct him.

The fourth step is for the patient to analyse their life, identify how addiction has affected their actions and relationships, and work on self-knowledge.

In the fifth stage, the patient prepares to change his or her lifestyle to avoid temptations and avoid situations that may encourage relapse. The goal is to understand what needs to be done to prevent relapse.

The sixth step is realisation. The patient recognises the harm they have caused to their loved ones through their addiction and seeks to correct their actions and their consequences where possible.

The seventh step is the use of spiritual practices and meditation. The programme includes spiritual practices, such as prayer and meditation, aimed at helping the patient find inner peace and ways to maintain a connection with a higher power.

Step eight – the patient makes a list of all the people they have harmed and realises that they are willing to right these wrongs if possible, provided it does not harm them or others.

In the ninth step, the patient actively works to correct mistakes, if possible, and takes the initiative in this process. Self-correction of the consequences of one’s actions is the most effective tool for success in the fight against addiction in the 12-step programme.

Stage 10 – the patient continues to analyse their behaviour, quickly admits their mistakes and takes steps to correct them.

In the eleventh stage, the patient continues to develop his spiritual consciousness through prayer and meditation, seeking to improve his relationship with a higher power.

Step 12 – the patient shares their experiences and skills with other people with addiction to help them in the recovery process.

The 12-step rehabilitation programme has been found to be effective for many people, and many addiction therapists and psychotherapists recommend it as an additional tool in addiction therapy. However, it is important to note that not everyone finds the programme a suitable treatment method for every person, and the approach to rehabilitation should be tailored to the individual needs of each patient.

The 12 Steps Programme: results and effectiveness

The 12-step treatment programme is one of the most widely used and recognised programmes for overcoming various addictions. It helps to achieve effective and time-long treatment results, while connecting people who have already travelled a difficult path with those who need help.

One of the main benefits of the 12-step programme is the creation of a community in which people suffering from the situation can support each other. The emotional support and understanding of other programme participants serve as very strong motivators for recovery.

The effectiveness of the 12-step programme is attributed to the personal results of participants. Many people report improvements in their quality of life, sobriety, and life recovery that have been achieved through rehab.

But you need to understand – the effectiveness of the 12-step programme can vary with individual patient characteristics. Some people may benefit from the support and success of the programme, while others may prefer alternative therapies.

The 12-step programme focuses on long-term recovery and sobriety maintenance. Many people who successfully complete the programme continue to participate in support groups and maintain their sobriety for many years.

It is important to note that 12-step programmes are not suitable for everyone and are not always the only effective treatment method. People have different manners and preferences, so it is important to choose a treatment method that best suits the individual characteristics of each patient. The advice of a counsellor or addiction therapist can help determine the best therapy pathway for each individual case.
