Treatment of alcoholism without desire

License of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine dated 08.07.2020 No. 3197/L-P

Treatment of alcoholism without the patient‘s consent, also known as compulsory treatment, is prohibited by law in Ukraine. Only in some cases is it allowed to hospitalize a person suffering from addiction for alcoholism treatment without their consent. It is important to know that treatment without the patient’s will will not bring the same effectiveness as therapy conducted with the patient’s support and active participation in the treatment process.

When is alcohol treatment possible without the patient’s consent?

Hospitalization of a patient with alcoholism without his or her consent is possible only by court order. Relatives of an alcoholic may file a petition with the court requesting compulsory hospitalization and explaining the reasons for such a decision.

When is treatment of alcoholics without desire possible?

  • in situations where a person is unable to make a decision about treatment due to a mental disorder;
  • if the actions of a person under the influence of alcohol are dangerous to others or to the person;
  • in case of alcohol intoxication, forced detoxification may be necessary to free the body from alcohol and prevent the consequences of its effects;
  • the court may order compulsory treatment in cases where a person has committed a crime or posed a threat to society while intoxicated;
  • in the event of a threat to the patient’s life and health due to severe alcohol poisoning or actions caused by alcohol abuse.

A person can be placed under the supervision of medical specialists who will conduct conservative therapy, detoxification and rehabilitation, even if they have not expressed a desire to undergo treatment. However, it should be borne in mind that alcoholism treatment if the patient refuses can cause resistance on the part of the patient and stimulate emotional and psychological problems. Therefore, even in the case of sufficient treatment, it is necessary to create a supportive and compassionate environment to help a person cope with the situation and make them want to continue treatment and get rid of addiction.

It is also important to remember that long-term positive results of alcoholism treatment can be obtained only when a person is really ready to change his or her life and give up alcohol. Compulsory treatment can be an initial step on the road to recovery, but it is important to provide support and all conditions to avoid relapse.

Compulsory treatment of alcoholism: is there any point?

Is it possible to cure alcoholism without the patient’s consent? Unfortunately, this practice is doomed to failure, because the main condition for effective treatment is the patient’s desire to change his or her life. It is not enough to remove toxins from the body and administer medications that cause an aversion to drinking. In the absence of the desire and motivation to give up alcohol, a person will return to alcohol again, even if they know about the possible consequences of coding. Alcoholism cannot be treated without consent. But emergency assistance can be the very start that begins the journey of understanding, acceptance, and solving the problem. After ridding the body of toxins, restoring consciousness, and working with psychologists, the patient usually makes the right decision and starts a new life in which there is no place for alcohol.
