Delirium tremens is a condition characterized by an acute, often abrupt change in mental status, cognitive decline, and altered consciousness. Delirium can cause difficulties in understanding the environment, orientation in time and space, and can be accompanied by drowsiness, anxiety, hallucinations, and delusions. This is a serious condition that requires immediate medical intervention.

Why does delirium develop? There are many reasons for delirium tremens . All of them are somehow related to changes in brain structures caused by external or internal factors.

Causes of delirium:

  • alcohol or drug abuse;
  • serious infections (for example, sepsis);
  • cardiovascular diseases;
  • metabolic disorders (e.g., electrolyte imbalance);
  • head injuries;
  • post-stroke condition;
  • operations;
  • damage to the liver or kidneys;
  • canceling or changing medications.

Most often, delirium tremens develops on the background of alcoholism. A person who abuses alcohol causes serious harm to his or her health. Not only internal organs and systems are destroyed, but also the psychological sphere. The effect of alcohol on the brain causes a strong physiological reaction. Symptoms of delirium are easy to recognize:

  • Patients with delirium tremens may experience changes in their level of consciousness. They may be sleepy, insensitive, or overly excited.
  • Patients may experience difficulties with orientation in time (not knowing what time of day, day of week, date) or in place (not knowing where they are).
  • Mental symptoms may include delusions (nonsensical or incoherent beliefs), hallucinations (sights or sounds that do not exist in reality), fears, or paranoia.
  • In delirium tremens, anxiety, nervousness, irritability, and even aggression may occur in response to internal experiences.
  • In a state of delirium, patients may change their behavior. This can be expressed in unpredictable reactions, confusion, and incorrect movements.
  • Patients with delirium tremens may have difficulty focusing attention, abstracting from the environment, and concentrating on a single task.
  • Speech becomes incoherent or incomprehensible to others.
  • There may also be physical symptoms such as sweating, trembling, heart palpitations, changes in appetite, etc.

Treatment of delirium requires an individualized approach, determination of the underlying cause and selection of therapy methods. It is important to provide medical care as soon as possible.

Treatment of white fever in the clinic

Before starting treatment, it is necessary to identify the underlying disease or factor that caused delirium. Patients with delirium require supervision and care. It is important to ensure the patient’s safety, prevent falls and injuries. In some cases, it may be necessary to prescribe medications to relieve symptoms of delirium, improve drowsiness, or stabilize the mental state. Such patients need emotional support during treatment, as the condition can be frightening and confusing. It is important to treat white fever in a hospital. Regular measurement of indicators, such as blood pressure, pulse, temperature, can help detect changes in the patient’s condition. Psychological support and conversations with the patient, as well as with relatives, are equally important to help reduce fear and anxiety.
