License of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine dated 08.07.2020 No. 3197/L-P

Gambling addiction, also known as pathological gambling, is a psychological disorder characterised by an uncontrollable need to gamble and bet, which can lead to serious personal, social and financial problems. Gambling addiction is reasonably considered a form of addiction.

People with gambling addiction experience a strong and uncontrollable urge to gamble. This can be comparable to feelings of addiction. Gamblers may continue to gamble even when they realise that gambling is harming them or causing financial and social problems. Over time, in order to achieve the same level of excitement, the addicted person begins to increase their bets. Many players spend large amounts of money on gambling, which can lead to financial instability and debt. As a result – gambling addiction destroys relationships with family and friends, creates problems at work and in studies. At the same time, the patients themselves hide their addiction and convince themselves that the problems do not exist.

One of the key signs of game addiction is the loss of control over the game and the inability to stop. Gaming replaces the real world, completely cancelling it out along with all responsibilities. Gamblers can spend many hours gambling, taking this time away from other important areas of life.

Gambling addiction can lead to serious consequences, including financial crises, deterioration of mental health and destruction of social relationships. Today, along with gambling addiction, there is computer gambling addiction, which is based on addiction to computer and virtual games. Both types of gambling need professional treatment.

Treatment of gambling addiction: methods and comprehensive approach

Treatment of gambling addiction should include a variety of methods and strategies, both medication and psychological. Among the methods shown to be most effective in treating gambling addiction are the following:

  • Psychotherapy – in particular cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) – is the mainstay of treatment for gambling addiction. Patients learn to recognise and control their gambling urges and develop strategies to manage stress and gambling.
  • Group support – joining support groups where people with gambling problems share their experiences and receive support from others.
  • Family therapy – helps family members better understand the problem and develop strategies to support the gamer.
  • Drug treatment – in some cases, medications such as serotonin inhibitors, antidepressants or impulse control drugs may be used. Drug therapy is strictly individualised after a number of tests have been carried out on the patient.
  • Time planning – creating structure in your daily routine and replacing time spent gambling with other activities such as sports, hobbies or socialising with family and friends.
  • Socialisation – widening their social circle and participating in social activities to divert them from gambling.
  • Develop financial management strategy and budget planning to prevent financial losses.
  • Using self-monitoring and self-observation techniques to identify gambling urges and prevent their realisation.

Treatment of gambling addiction requires a comprehensive approach and can be effective if help is sought in a timely manner.
