A mental disorder, also known as a psychotic disorder, is a rather capacious term used in psychiatry and psychology to describe a wide range of conditions in which human perception, mood, thinking and behaviour are disturbed and different from the norm. Mental disorders can vary in severity, duration, and symptoms. Treatment of mental disorders: effective techniques and comprehensive approach

Let us take a closer look at the main methods used to treat mental disorders. In modern medical practice, the following approaches are the most widespread:

  • Psychotherapy, or talk therapy, is one of the most common treatments for mental health disorders. Different types of treatment such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), psychoanalysis, dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) and many others help patients to make sense of their problems, learn to manage their emotions and develop healthy strategies to manage situations.
  • Pharmacotherapy – Some mental disorders such as depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and anxiety disorders may require medication. A psychiatrist will prescribe suitable medication, taking which will help to relieve symptoms of the illness and stabilise your mental state.
  • Rehabilitation and Recovery – some people with severe mental health problems may require rehabilitation and recovery. These programmes include self-management, social adaptation and life skills training.
  • Family therapy – will be useful for patients whose mental health problems affect family relationships. It helps family members to resolve conflicts, improve communication and support the patient in the recovery process.
  • Self-help and support – many patients find support and help in support groups. Participation in such groups allows them to share experiences, advice and feelings with others facing similar problems.
  • Lifestyle changes – a healthy lifestyle, including regular physical activity, a balanced diet and regular sleep will have a positive impact on mind and body.
  • Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) – used in severe cases of depression and other mental disorders that do not respond to other treatments. This method involves briefly stimulating the brain with an electrical impulse, which can improve symptoms.
  • Art therapy – creativity can help patients express their feelings and emotions through art and music, which promotes psychological recovery.

Patients should work with qualified professionals such as psychotherapists, psychiatrists and psychologists to choose the best treatment methods to meet their needs. The most effective results will be achieved by using several complementary methods at the same time. It is the integrated therapy that helps to cope with the problem as accurately and quickly as possible.
