Bipolar affective disorder or bipolar mental disorder is an illness that until recently was called manic-depressive psychosis. This name perfectly characterises the problem:
The disease is characterised by the duration and inheritability of symptoms;
periods of rapid changes in mood and behaviour are pronounced;
Depressive, manic and mixed states of consciousness alternate with each other;
there may be asymptomatic periods or periods of sluggishness.
Often patients with bipolar disorder suffer from alcohol dependence, which intensifies the manifestations of both manic and depressive stages of the disease.
Bipolar personality disorder: symptomatology
Manic and depressive stages succeed each other, can have different duration and degree of severity. It is much easier for others to recognize the manic stage of the disorder, because its symptomatology is more vivid and radically different from the usual behavioural reactions. During this period, the patient can experience very strong feelings, his mood is elevated and may not worsen for several months. There is a lack of judgement, a sense of proportion. The patient may feel like the “ruler of the world”, do not limit his desires, do not pay attention to social norms. Often the manic stage is accompanied by increased libido, open sexual relations.
Mania can manifest itself in aggression, especially if others do not support the mood of the patient, “do not understand” him. A person suffering from bipolar disorder, being in the stage of mania, does not realise that something is wrong with him, does not hear his relatives, is not ready to accept the disease and begin treatment. His behaviour is the norm for himself.
But euphoria and pleasure are always replaced by the stage of depression, which is characterised by:
- a hypertrophied sense of guilt;
- a sense of worthlessness;
- extreme fatigue, apathy;
- loss of interest in life;
- suicidal thoughts and actions;
- cognitive decline;
- sleep disturbances.
During this period, the consequences of the person’s actions during mania – loss of financial opportunities, licentious behaviour, loss of social circle – are particularly pronounced. This only aggravates the sense of guilt, which entails thoughts about the insignificance of the patient and his life.
Mixed phases of the disorder combine manic and depressive stages. Such periods are very distressing for the patient, because his thoughts diverge in radically opposite directions.

Treatment of bipolar disorder in a private psychiatric clinic GarMed
For the treatment of manic-depressive psychosis, stabilising drugs are used to help bring the patient out of the acute stage of the disease. Medications reduce anxiety, normalise sleep, help to cope with depression. In addition to drug treatment, doctors include in the rehabilitation programme sessions of psychotherapy, social adaptation, work with a psychologist and subspecialists, if necessary.
Treatment of bipolar disorder lasts a long time and can be carried out for many years in the form of supportive therapy. The absence of treatment in such a disease is allowed only if the symptoms are not complicated and the patient can control them independently. But even in such situations, the patient should undergo regular check-ups and liaise with the attending physician.
Treatment of bipolar disorder in the GarMed clinic is an individual approach to each patient and support of the patient’s relatives during the whole period of therapy. You can make an appointment online by filling out the form on the website or by phone.
