Psychosis is a disorder characterised by a contradiction between reality and the patient’s reactions to it. Psychosis is often one of the components of another mental illness, but it can also be a separate disorder.
In psychiatric practice, psychoses of several types are distinguished:
- endogenous – caused by the influence of internal factors;
- exogenous – caused by external influences;
- organic – arise as a response to changes in the structures of the brain.
The cause of the development of endogenous psychosis may be endocrine and neurological disorders, heredity, age-related changes, schizophrenic personality disorders. To the external causes of the development of psychosis include stress, transferred infectious diseases, different types of intoxication.
How to determine psychosis: symptoms and diagnosis
Psychosis does not arise abruptly and spontaneously. The disease develops gradually and at first it is quite difficult to diagnose it. The beginning of the disease is characterised by minor changes in the character and behaviour of a person. Gradually the symptoms increase, hallucinations appear and it becomes impossible to ignore the disease.
The main symptomatology of psychosis includes such manifestations as:
- increased irritability, aggressiveness, anger;
- sleep and appetite disorders;
- hypersensitivity;
- lack of interest in themselves, appearance, the world around them;
- sudden changes in mood and behaviour;
- unreasonable fears;
- cognitive decline;
- cessation of communication with others, “withdrawal into oneself”;
- sluggishness of movements or a sharp increase in motor activity;
- delusions, hallucinations, persecution mania.
Only a psychiatrist can diagnose psychosis. Diagnosis includes obtaining information from the patient’s loved ones, studying his behavioural reactions, conducting a number of examinations, collecting anamnesis. An accurate diagnosis can be made only on the results of long-term observation of the patient.
