Suicidal thoughts in adolescents and adults are a serious problem that requires immediate attention. Such thoughts often indicate a deep emotional and psychological crisis and can lead to tragic consequences if measures are not taken in a timely manner.

Why suicidal thoughts are dangerous in teenagers

Suicidal ideation is a phenomenon that requires immediate intervention from loved ones and help from specialists. Leaving suicidal behavior and thoughts unattended can lead to the most complex and irreversible consequences. The emergence of suicidal thoughts in adolescents requires special attention:

  • They often experience intense emotional outbursts and may not realize the seriousness of their actions. Suicidal thoughts can lead to hasty and irreversible actions.
  • Teenagers may not see a way out of difficult situations, not realizing that problems are temporary and that there are solutions.
  • No longer children and not yet adults, they may experience peer pressure, including bullying at school or on social media, which contributes to their isolation and increased feelings of hopelessness.
  • Due to age-related characteristics, teenagers may not know how to properly cope with difficulties and negative emotions.

What causes suicidal thoughts?

The emergence of suicidal thoughts can be triggered by:

  • Mental disorders – depression, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental illnesses.
  • Traumatic life events – loss of a loved one, violence, parental divorce, bullying, serious conflicts.
  • Problems with self-esteem and self-perception – low self-esteem, feelings of worthlessness or uselessness.
  • Chronic physical illness – persistent pain, limitations and illnesses can lead to feelings of helplessness and a desire to escape the suffering.
  • Addictions – Alcohol and drug abuse can worsen emotional well-being and lead to depression and suicidal thoughts.

How to recognize suicidal intent

How do you know that the situation requires intervention? That a person has developed a disorder (disease) that cannot be dealt with without outside help? Pay attention to behavior, there are many symptoms that signal a clinical picture of suicidal tendencies:

  • Explicit statements – a person may directly talk about their desire to commit suicide or express thoughts that their life has no meaning. Such thoughts are a clear signal to pay more attention to a loved one.
  • Sudden changes in behavior, such as withdrawal, loss of interest in favorite activities, refusal to communicate with loved ones, are also alarming signs.
  • Talking about death or suicide-related topics – the person may increasingly mention death, talk about the meaning of life or their future in a negative way.
  • Preparing to leave – sometimes a person begins to prepare for suicide: giving away their things, writing farewell letters, or putting their affairs in order.
  • Sharp emotional swings – the patient may experience strong mood swings, from deep despondency to an unusually calm or joyful state after making the decision to commit suicide.

How to help a person who does not want to live

The solution should always be selected individually, taking into account the circumstances, reasons, nature of the problem, symptoms. The wrong attitude, harsh statements can provoke a backlash, lead to a catastrophe. If you want to help a person with suicidal thoughts:

  • Talk to him. Don’t avoid talking about it. Direct discussion will help relieve some of the emotional tension. It’s important to listen to the person without judgment.
  • Offer professional help. Involve professionals such as psychologists or psychotherapists who can professionally assess the person’s condition and offer appropriate treatment.
  • Be there. Support from friends and family is essential. Regular presence and interest in the person’s condition can help them feel like they are not alone.
  • Make sure he is not isolated. Social isolation can make things worse. Try to create a comfortable and supportive environment for him.
  • Keep him/her safe. Make sure the person does not have access to objects or substances that could be used for suicide.

How is suicidal thoughts treated?

If suicidal thoughts are noticed – how to get rid of them? In acute situations, hospitalization or a short stay in specialized institutions may be required to prevent suicide attempts. The best treatment plan is therapy under the full supervision of specialists at a specialized clinic. After the initial consultation and passing the necessary examinations, the patient will receive the most effective treatment. A comprehensive approach may include the following methods and techniques:

  • Psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy helps change negative attitudes and develop healthy thinking strategies. Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), which is aimed at teaching emotional control skills, can also be useful.
  • Medication. If suicidal thoughts are associated with depression or another mental illness, psychosis, a psychiatrist may prescribe medications – antidepressants or mood stabilizers.
  • Support groups. Participating in support groups helps a person feel understood and heard, which is extremely important for people going through a crisis.

Suicidal thoughts are a serious threat, especially for teenagers who are more vulnerable to stress and emotional crises. The tendency for such disorders to develop is disappointing. It is important to prevent suicide from happening and to notice even fleeting thoughts of suicide in a timely manner. In moments of deep despair, unwillingness to communicate, if a feeling of wrongness or anxiety arises, pay attention to the person close to you and choose the most reliable way to help.
